First Clinical Trial of Electronic Cigarettes Suggests They May Be More Effective Than Traditional NRT Products
When I originally tried quitting smoking, I tried using nicotine gum with no success. The problem was, I missed the actual feel of smoke along with the other physical aspects of cigarette smoking. Fortunately, e-cigarettes have been able to replicate these feelings quite well, and it comes as no surprise that studies are finding the same thing to be true. Yesterday, the results of the first clinical trial of e-cigarettes was published here in the journal BMC Public Health, a reputable public health journal. According to the researchers
The subjects were 40 healthy, adult, regular smokers with no interest in quitting. They were provided with electronic cigarettes and minimal intervention (a baseline and four follow-up clinic visits). They were not instructed to try to quit smoking, but were simply allowed to use the electronic cigarettes however they wished.
The sustained smoking abstinence rate at six-month follow-up was 22.5%.
The proportion of subjects who experienced a sustained reduction in the amount smoked by at least 50% was 32.5%.
Thus, 55% of subjects either cut down their consumption by 50% or more or quit smoking altogether at six months follow-up.
No serious adverse events were reported in the study.
This is very encouraging news for potential cigarette smokers who have not yet given e-cigarettes a try. The authors of the study concluded that
Although not formally regulated as a pharmaceutical product, the e-Cigarette can help smokers to remain abstinent or reduce their cigarette consumption. By replacing tobacco cigarettes, the e-cigarette can only save lives. Here we show for the first time that e-Cigarettes can substantially decrease cigarette consumption without causing significant side effects in smokers not intending to quit.
If you have yet to try an e-cigarette, I suggest giving one a try! Winter is fast approaching here in the western hemisphere, and with many countries imposing stricter anti-smoking laws, being able to use your e-cigarette inside is a nice treat!
E-Lites featured on ITV Daybreak
It has recently come to my attention that the E-Lites e-cigarette has been featured in the television show Daybreak, and has received a positive endorsement from those on the show. In my review of the E-Lite E200 ecig, I mentioned that I really enjoy how long the battery lasts on a single charge, and I have been happy with the product so far.
E-Lites has also released a new product known as the E-Lites e-gar. The eGar is a disposable electronic cigarette with the look and feel of a real cigar. The eGar contains approximately 40 cigarettes worth of puffing, and is available in the starter kits section as both a single unit and in a disposable 5-pack. I have yet to try an eGar, but as an occasional cigar smoker, I am tempted to try one.
ITV’s Daybreak signalled a new dawn for smokers today as Dr Hillary Jones and fellow presenters discussed the benefits of stubbing out tobacco cigarettes in favour of healthier electronic cigarettes such as E-Lites.
They were commenting on the opening of a ‘Vaping Bar’ in Yorkshire where smokers can freely use electronic cigarettes, which is often nicknamed ‘vaping’ because the devices produce nicotine in the form of a vapour that can be inhaled.
Dr Hilary said: “Electronic cigarettes like E-Lites give you vaporised nicotine but no tar, so no carcinogenic lung cancer causing chemicals and no passive smoking element. People want to go to the pub and still indulge in smoking, and they can do so safely with electronic cigarettes.”
Presenters including Adrian Chiles, Christine Bleakley and Kate Garraway discussed the way in which electronic cigarettes contain only nicotine and therefore replicate the sensation of conventional cigarettes in far healthier way due to the absence of tar and tobacco.
Dr Hilary commented that E-Lites were similar to nicotine gums, patches and sprays in terms of helping satisfy the craving of smokers.
You can read more on the story and see the video on the E-Lites homepage. The vaping bar mentioned in the article looks to be quite neat, and if you have happened to take a visit there, let us know more about it in the comments section!

Volcano Express Starter Kits Now Available
As the electronic cigarette market continues to grow in leaps and bounds, many people have become interested in switching from regular cigarettes to e-cigarettes. A number of different kits and options exist, and it can sometimes be difficult in choosing a good introductory brand.
Recently I learned that the folks over at Volcano released their new Express Starter Kit line into the market. At a cost of only $22.99, these kits have become an excellent way to try a quality electronic cigarette at a low cost. Unlike most disposable e-cigarettes on the market today, The Volcano Express kits are fully compatible with the Volcano V-Kit, allowing you to use the items in the starter kit with other Volcano products.
Each express starter kit comes with a battery and two flavor cartridges, which are equivalent to about a pack of cigarettes each. The batteries are available in both black and white, and the cartridges are can be tobacco flavor or menthol, and you can select the nicotine level of your choice.
If you have been on the fence about trying an e-cigarette, the Volcano express starter kit is a good and low cost option to try!
Blu Smart Pack Flying Off Shelves?
I just read the following story about Blu Cigs, and I’m quite interested in the concept of the “smart pack”. Although I didn’t like the original Blu Cig I tried months ago, I have heard that the newer models are much more reliable, and produce more vapor than the old Blu Cig. According to this article, the charger packs are flying off the shelves, so I’m curious to see how it is compared to other charging packs such as the one offered by V2 Cigs, and the 510 Smart PCC.
Hi-Tech E-Cig Flies off Shelves Just Two Weeks After Consumer Availability
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Less than two weeks after the official launch of blu Cigs’ much-anticipated Smart Pack, the innovative e-cigarette company has announced that it has shattered sales records – with over 15,000 units already sold and a one-week waiting list for orders already in effect. “Vapers” (or e-cigarette users) can’t get enough of blu’s industry-first Smart Pack, with its tech-savvy enhancements that include a built in homing device, letting you find and
connect with other blu users wherever you are, automatic re-ordering when your supply gets low, and longer lasting battery life and flavor.
“We knew we had a groundbreaking product before we launched, but the response and sales have surpassed even our expectations. The orders have just been pouring in,” said Jason Healy, President of blu. “We spent months polling our customers on what they wanted next out of their e-cig, and the positively overwhelming demand just proves we got it right. We’ve created a completely new experience that’s not available from any other company in the e-cig industry, allowing for a whole new level of social interaction among our users.”
Future enhancements to the Smart Pack will include integration with social media platforms – enabling users to indicate relationship status, network with friends and colleagues, and even identify locations that allow the use of the product.
I look forward to trying the new smart pack, along with the revised Blu Cig itself! Stay tuned for a possible review in the near future. If anyone else has had experience with the new pack, share your review with us in the blog comments!
Smok Tech e-Power Electronic Cigarette
The e-Power electronic cigarette is a new player in the e-cigarette market today. Similar in resemblance to a Joye eGo, the e-Power e-cig uses Joye 510 compatible atomizers or cartomizers, which have proven to be
some of the best atomizers on the market in terms of vapor production. The e-Power has a slightly larger diameter than the eGo, and the cone on the e-Power is not compatible with eGo cones.
the e-Power e-cigarette runs at 3.7 volts and has the ability to power atomizers and cartomizers ranging from 2.0 ohms and up, allowing you to choose which atomizer resistance works best for your vaping. The large, replaceable battery in the ePower has a 1050mAH capacity, and provides a continuous source of power for the entire day. It takes between two and four hours to fully charge an e-Power battery.
The e-Power replaceable battery e-cig kit is available from Madvapes for approximately $45 USD.

Charlie Sheen to Release NicoSheen Brand E-Cigarettes
Recently, former Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen decided to partner with an e-cigarette company in order to release his own line of electronic cigarettes. The Nicosheen is relatively new, and is currently not taking orders. However, there is a place to leave yourname and e-mail in order to receive availability updates.
I’m curious to see how this brand will stack up to competitors such as V2 Cigs. It appears that the NicoSheen e-cig will come in the following battery configurations:
- 240mAh
- 650
- 900mAh
- 1300mAh.
Tornado Tank Low Resistance Atomizer Released
It has recently come to my attention that Totally Wicked has released a line of low resistance Tornado Tank Atomizers. The Tornado Tank is essentially a re-branded eGo-T (which I’m a fan of), and utilizes a tank system in order to avoid frequent refilling. Low resistance atomizers produce a hotter atomizer
temperature, which creates more vapor and a bigger throat hit. The downside however, is that these ecig atomizers generally have a shorter lifespan than regular ones. Due to the increased risk of a shorter lifespan, Totally Wicked is not offering warranty on these atomizers. However, to reflect the lack of warranty on these atomizers Totally Wicked is selling them for $11.04 versus $14.44 for regular Tornado Tank atomizers.
Tornado tank kits and the low resistance Tornado Tank Atomizer is available here on Totally Wicked. The atomizer runs at 1.2 Ohms. The price is pretty good, but I’m interested in seeing how long these new low resistance atomizers last especially since I’ve heard varying things about the lifespan of low resistance 510 atomizers.
If you have any experience in using a low resistance Tornado Tank atomizer, feel free to leave a comment detailing your experience!
Volcano Inferno-T Kit
Since the release of the Joye eGo-T kit, many other e-cig retailers have been releasing their own
rebranded eGo-T kits, each with varying accessories. One of the kits that caught my attention is Volcano’s Inferno-T Kit. The Inferno-T represents Volcano’s fourth product offering, and the starter kit comes with a wide array of accessories. Each Inferno-T kit comes with:
- 650 mah USB Passthrough Battery
- 1000 mah ultra battery
- INFERNO Tank-o-mizer
- 5 Blank Tanks
- Carry Bag
- Mini USB cable
- Wall Charger
- A Bottle of V-Liquid in the strength and flavor of your choosing
I really like how the kit includes both a 650mAH battery and a 1000mAH battery, allowing you to switch battery sizes on the go. The 650mAH battery should last up to 3 days of normal use, which gives you peace of mind that your battery won’t run out in the middle of the day (like the 510 battery sometimes does). I can only imagine that the 1000mAH would last even longer, which would be excellent for long car trips. The price is also very good for the value, and replacement parts such as the Inferno Tank-O-Mizer can be purchased here for only $11.99 if you run into any problems with yours.
The Volcano Inferno-T retails for $74.99, and is available on the Volcano Ecigs website. If you’re looking for a quality e-cig with a long battery life and great vapor production, I highly recommend giving the Volcano Inferno-T a try.

Totally Wicked-ELiquid to Sue FDA
Just a few days ago, it was revealed via TweetDeck that the US subsidiary of Totally Wicked-ELiquid inc intends to sue the United States Food and Drug Association for improperly seizing some of their e-cigarette imports as well as unlawfully regulating e-cigarettes as drug devices. In their verified complaint, Totally Wicked Inc. asks that the court
- Enter a temporary restraining order, a preliminary injunction, and a permanent injunction that enjoins Defendants from enforcing any import ban on TWI’s electronic cigarettes arising out of their purported classification as a drug, device, or drug-device combination product under the FDCA, or from enforcing Import Alert 66-41 with respect to TWI’s electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette accessories;
- Enter a declaratory judgment that Defendants are without statutory authority to regulate TWI’s electronic cigarettes and accessories as a drug, device, or drug-device combination product under the FDCA, and that the addition of electronic cigarettes to Import Alert 66-41 is invalid, unlawful, and ultra vires of Defendants’ authority; and
- Order the release of any of TWI’s electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette accessories currently detained or seized by the United States pursuant to the FDA’s unlawful declaration that it has jurisdiction over electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette accessories under the FDA’s authority to regulate drugs, devices, and drug-device combination products;
- Award TWI its costs and expenses, including reasonable attorneys’ fees; and Award such other and further relief as is necessary and appropriate.
In summary, totally Wicked is suing the FDA in order to ensure that it no longer attempts to seize importations of Totally Wicked’s electronic cigarettes, as well as to give back previously seized shipments of Totally Wicked e-cigarettes, and finally, pay for TWI’s legal expenses and “further relief” which I could imagine may be quite a hefty sum if Totally Wicked Wins the case.
From the looks of it, legal services are currently being provided by Thompson Hine LLC, one of the largest corporate law firms in the United States. I feel hopeful that Totally Wicked Inc may have a case, especially since it was recently ruled that electronic cigarettes cannot be regulated as drug delivery devices.
I will continue posting updates on the case as it develops!
