The VL4 and Included USB Charger
Earlier this month, I reviewed the Vapourlites VL5 Disposable E-Cig, and as promised I’m following up with a review of the Vapourlites VL4 rechargeable e-cig. Available in two flavors (tobacco and menthol), the VL4 is rechargeable and uses a long lasting cartridge system.
After unpacking my VL4, I first noticed its construction. I found it to be both longer and heavier than the VL5 as well as lacking a soft filter. However, as a rechargeable e-cig it is normal to be slightly longer in order to ensure a better battery life. In fact, the battery on the VL5 lasted for quite a long time, and I was usually able to go a day and a bit of heavy vaping (three days of light vaping) before needing to recharge the battery for 3-4 hours. In my month and a half of use with the battery, I haven’t run into any problems with loss of battery life or the battery failing.
The cartridges lasted a fairly long time, and I estimate that I was able to get about 20-25 cigarettes worth of puffs before the cartridges would run out. Although it wasn’t as much as listed on the Vapourlites website, it was around the average mark for a rechargeable e-cig of this size. All the cartridges I received worked well and I didn’t have any die prematurely on me. Both flavors were also very tasty and produced large vapor clouds. I found the flavors had a nice balance between throat hit and thick vapor without being too overpowering. The tobacco cartridge has a fairly smooth taste to it, and it reminded my quite a bit of camel cigarettes. On the other hand, the menthol was very tasty and gave me a refreshing aftertaste and the flavor reminded me quite a bit of a strong menthol cigarette, without much of a tobacco taste.
Overall, I find the Vapourlites VL4 to be a solid and affordably priced rechargeable electronic cigarette. If you’re looking for a rechargeable e-cig with good vapor production, I suggest trying out the VL4!
Its been a long time since my last review, and since then the e-cigarette market has undergone a great number of changes, mostly for the better. One fairly exciting recent development has been the rise in popularity of disposable e-cigs. Unlike their rechargeable brethren, disposables are often much smaller but also run the downside of having shorter (and non-rechargeable) battery life. Today I’ve decided to take a good look at the popular Vaporlites disposable e-cigarette and seeing how it stacks up to other e-cigs (Vapourlites also manufactures a rechargeable e-cig, I’ll be posting that review later this week!).
The Vapourlites Disposable E-Cig
Upon receiving my Vapourlites VL5 disposable (courtesy of Vapourlites), I first took a look at its physical characteristics. The e-cig is compact, light, and is about the same length as a regular cigarette. After holding it for a few hours, I began to appreciate how comfortable and natural the VL5 felt to hold in comparison to larger rechargeable e-cigarette models. The texture of the unit was also smooth, and the filter was squishy which made it very comfortable to hold. After taking a few drags, I was impressed with the menthol flavor of the e-liquid. It was smooth and refreshing yet still gave a nice throat hit and surprisingly large vapor clouds for such a small unit! The liquid lasted a surprising amount of time, and in my unit the batteries ran out before the liquid did. In addition to the comfortable texture, buying a prepackaged disposables takes all the hassle out of having to refill carts, recharge batteries, and replace carts. Bringing a spare disposable along with you is a great way to ensure that you’ll get a great vaping experience every time.
Vapourlites Disposable Compared To Other E-Cigs
My only real complaint is the relatively short battery life only allowed me to get about a half a week of heavy vaping before the battery died and cannot be recharged (although I did find it lasted longer than I expected for a disposable). However, I do feel the relatively short lifespan is more a limitation of current battery technology rather than a fault of Vaporlite. I should also mention that you need to be careful not to bite down too hard on the tip of the e-cig, as the top can pop out (although it can easily placed back in).
Overall, I was impressed with the quality of the Vaporlites VL5, and although the battery life doesn’t compare to rechargeable e-cigs, it still packs a nice punch of vapor and has the benefit of being easily replaced without any hassle. I especially recommend the Vaporlites disposable to those who are looking to quit smoking yet retain a similar physical experience of holding the cigarette.
The NJOY Kings, available in three flavors
Recently, I was invited by the folks over at NJOY to attend the launch party of the much anticipated NJOY Kings. Not only are the Kings much smaller than most e-cigarettes, they are also lighter, have a paper-like feel, and a soft filter.
The launch takes place this Thursday evening at the Jane hotel in Manhattan. Several high-profile guests are expected to be there, including Miss November of Playboy (Britney Nola). Expect live coverage of the event here on E-Cig Central, with photos, updates, and even a live video stream! I look forward to trying the Kings as well as provide realtime updates regarding the launch. I’m also planning on trying to do some interviews with some of the people over at NJOY to get some insight into the development process of the Kings.
Stay tuned for Thursday!!
The White Cloud Batteries and Some Cartridges
Manufactured by White Cloud, a U.S-based e-cigarette company, The Cirrus 3X Starter Kit is designed to be an all-encompassing e-cig solution. Coming with 3 battery sizes, a three pronged charger, 5 packs of e-cig cartridges (for a total of 25), and a two year warranty instead of the 6 month warranty on other White Cloud Kits.
Upon opening my White Cloud Kit, I noticed that the packaging was professional and the batteries shipped pre-charged, allowing me to use them right away. The batteries ranged from short to long (the shortest being close to a real cigarette in terms of size), and they provided long lasting vaping action. Between the three batteries, I was easily able to go an entire day without needing to recharge. I also received a three-pronged squid charger as an extra item, which came in really handy, as I tend to recharge multiple e-cigarettes at once during the night.
The White Cloud E-Cig Sizes
The cartridges lasted quite a long time (I got about 15-17 cigarettes worth per cart), and after going through 10 cartridges I have yet to have one fail on me. White Cloud offers several e-cig flavors including:
- Menthol: The menthol was nice and icy cool. It provided a strong throat hit for a menthol flavor, and left a nice aftertaste.
- Kick: Kick was a spicy flavored e-liquid, and it reminded me a lot of cinnamon hearts. The throat hit with this one was very strong (which some people may not enjoy), and it left a pleasant spicy aftertaste in my mouth afterwards.
- Regular: This is a straight tobacco flavor, and reminds me quite a bit of Marlboro Reds.
- Moscow Mule: Another tobacco flavor, Moscow Mule was stronger tasting than Regular, and was more on par with unfiltered Lucky Strikes.
- Snap: This flavor was a very minty, and it reminded me a bit of Marlboro Skylines, a mint flavored cigarette.
- The Lime & Coconut: This flavor tasted quite a bit of lime, and had a coconut aftertaste. The Lime & Coconut had a medium throat hit, and was my favorite flavor of the group.
The Optional Squid Charger
Overall, the White Cloud Cirrus Starter Kit is a great starter kit, and serves as a great total vaporization package. The three batteries provide an all day vaping experience, and the flavors offered were unique and tasty. The extended two year warranty also provides peace of mind when it comes to anything going wrong. You can purchase this starter kit here on White Cloud.
It has recently come to my attention via a forum post that the California Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE) has recently endorsed electronic cigarettes as an appropriate means of tobacco harm reduction. It is a small, but reassuring step forward that more organizations are beginning to recognize the importance of tobacco harm reduction strategies.
Below is the e-mail transcript from Jack Kearney, Professor of Human Services and Addiction Studies at Cypress College, Loyola Merrimount university, which sheds a positive light on e-cigarettes and THR.
I am pleased to announce that the California Association for Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE) has formally endorsed the use of THR and electronic cigarettes. To my knowledge this is the first major organization in the addiction treatment world to take such a stand, and I will send this on to other similar groups and ask them for similar support.
I believe it is a small but important step as this represents support from experts in the addiction profession rather than amateur opinions from groups who take money from the pharmaceutical industry and who seem to be more interested in fighting smoking than helping smokers.
The specific policy statement and description of CAADE is below.
(My original motion used the word “smoking” rather than “tobacco”, but to get it passed I had to accept a bit of a compromise.)
The California Association for Alcohol & Drug Educators (CAADE) supports efforts by the addiction treatment community to utilize its treatment expertise in developing tobacco cessation tools that include both abstinence-based and harm-reduction models including the use of electronic cigarettes.
CAADE accredits addiction studies programs in over 40 colleges and universities in California, Arizona and Nevada. It also issues the highest level of addiction counselor certification in California, and currently represents more than 6000 counselors, college faculty members and students.
Personally, I view this as a solid step forward in the acceptance of e-cigarettes as a legitimate tobacco harm reduction strategy. One can only hope that governments will begin to take notice and implement their own sane tobacco harm reduction policies at the benefit of consumers.
The EonSmoke E-Cigarette and Flavor Carts
For the purposes of this review, I received both an Eonsmoke Premium kit, and a sampling of all the flavors currently available. Each EonSmoke Premium kit comes with two rechargeable batteries (one long, one short), a charging kit, a pack of 5 flavor cartomizers of your choice, and an instructional booklet. Upon receiving the kit, I noticed that the packaging was quite nice, and the kit was well put together. The batteries shipped pre-charged, so I was able to begin vaping with my ecig right away.
The shorter battery produced a stronger throat hit for me, but it lasted less than the long battery. With average use, I was able to get about 4 hours out of my small battery versus 6 with the longer one. Recharging took about an hour and a half for the small battery, and 3 hours for the larger one. The batteries I chose were automatic, and they were easy to activate when smoking.
The EonSmoke uses a cartomizer system, with replacement cartridges sold online on their website. All of my test cartomizers worked well, and no atomizers inside died while I was using them. They also produced a medium throat hit and a lot of vapor. The flavors varied on how long they lasted, with tobacco lasting the longest (70ish puffs) and strawberry the shortest (40ish puffs).
The flavors I tried with my kit included:
- I really enjoyed this flavor. The menthol was smooth and cold, and didn’t taste like mint. Out of all the flavors, this one was my favorite.
- Strawberry was my second favorite flavor. The vapor was very tasty, and reminded me of candy strawberries. The only downside was that the flavor ran out quickly and was replaced by a much more mellow strawberry flavor after about 30 puffs.
- I really enjoyed this flavor, and preffered it to the menthol. It had a strong taste of mint and menthol, and each puff was quite nice. Near the end of the cartridge, it provided quite a big throat hit.
- This flavor was also very nice. It left a smooth berry aftertaste in my mouth, and reminded me of a smooth cigarette such as a Winston or Camel. The flavor also lasted quite a long time.
My EonSmoke Kit
Overall, I was quite impressed with EonSmoke’s offerings. Their batteries and cartomizers lasted quite a long time, and produced a pleasurable vaping experience. In addition, their e-liquid flavors were quite tasty, and offered a selection to suit a wide range of tastes. You can purchase an EonSmoke Premium Kit here on the EonSmoke website.
I recently came across an article on the European Society for Cardiology (ESC) which has found that electronic cigarettes do not damage the heart. As someone who believes in the policies of tobacco harm reduction, I feel that it is important for people to understand the benefits of switching from traditional cigarettes to electronic ones.
Smoking is the most preventable risk factor for cardiac and lung disease and is expected to cause 1 billion deaths during the 21st century. Electronic cigarettes have been marketed in recent years as a safer habit for smokers, with several millions of people already using them worldwide.
Electronic cigarettes simulate the effect of smoking by producing an inhaled vapor. The device consists of a battery, a cartridge containing liquid and a heating element which gets warm and evaporates the liquid. Laboratory analyses of the liquids show that they are less toxic than regular cigarettes. Most studies have found no nitrosamines, but even in studies where nitrosamines were found, the levels detected were 500-1400 times less than the amount present in one tobacco cigarette. This means that electronic cigarettes must be used daily for 4-12 months to get the amount of nitrosamines present in a single tobacco cigarette.
Since heart disease is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in smokers, with 40% of deaths in smokers due to coronary artery disease alone, the research team decided to perform the first clinical study of the acute effects of electronic cigarettes on cardiac function.
They decided to compare their results with the acute effects of regular cigarettes on cardiac function since electronic cigarettes are marketed to smokers only, as an alternative habit.
Previous studies from the research group and several others have shown that acute smoking inhalation produces significant defects in myocardial function. This indicates that subclinical dysfunction is already present in apparently healthy asymptomatic young people who smoke tobacco cigarettes. The goal was to evaluate whether these signs of preclinical disease appear in a similar population after using electronic cigarettes.
The researchers measured myocardial function in 20 healthy young daily smokers aged 25-45 years before and after smoking one tobacco cigarette and 22 daily electronic cigarette users of similar age before and after using the device for 7 minutes.
Experienced users of electronic cigarettes were studied because they use the device more intensively than first-time users. Although both groups were of equal age, users of electronic cigarettes had a 44% higher lifetime tobacco smoking exposure compared to current smokers.
For the electronic cigarettes, a commercially available liquid with a nicotine concentration of 11mg/ml was used (NOBACCO USA Mix). This was tested by an independent toxicology laboratory and found to contain no nitrosamines or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons…

Blu is now owned by Lorillard Inc.
It has recently come to my attention that Lorillard Inc, a major U.S tobacco retailer (the makers of popular cigarette brands including Kent and Newport) has purchased the e-cigarette brand Blu Cigs for the sum of $135 million dollars. I’m excited about this move, as I feel that with Lorillard’s resources the Blu Cigs brand will continue to improve in quality. I’m curious to see if other major tobacco companies will follow suit and purchase other e-cigarette companies.

It has recently come to my attention that the South Beach Smoke Deluxe personal charging case has become the hottest selling accessory on South Beach Smoke’s website. I’ve done some digging aruond, and the deluxe charging case appears to be quite similar to the 510 Smart PCC for the Joye
The South Beach Smoke PCC
510. The case has a large advanced cell battery inside (which makes charging very safe), and can be recharged via a USB port located on the side of the case. On a full charge, the case is able to recharge your South Beach Smoke Deluxe e-cigarettes (including SuperMax batteries) up to four times, which makes it ideal for when you’re on the go and don’t have access to an outlet. The case also has a battery indicator to let you know when you need to recharge the PCC.
I really like the design of the case, as I find it looks quite classy and professional. It also comes with interior and exterior lights which can be illuminated to help you see better in low light environments. I look forward to writing a review on the case in the near future. If you’ve given the South Beach PCC a try, feel free to let me know what you think of it via the comments section!
It has recently come to my attention that a bill proposing a 70% tax on e-cigarettes has been amended, and the proposed tax will not come into effect in Hawaii. An e-mail statement I received from the Hawaiian-based Volcano E-Cigs claims that
The Senate had received more than 1,200 pieces of testimony on the issue and decided last friday to ENFORCE the part of the bill that restricted the use of ecigs to persons under 18 years of age BUT they amended the entire part that would tax the product.
I feel that this amended legislation is both a reasonable and responsible decision regarding e-cigarettes from the Hawaii senators. I don’t feel that minors should have access to any nicotine products. However, adults should have the freedom and right to choose a much better alternative to traditional cigarette smoking.
Don’t forget to support organizations such as CASAA either through volunteering or by sending a donation. CASAA is working hard to raise awareness of the benefits of e-cigarettes and other forms of nicotine replacement therapy, and can help policymakers introduce smart e-cigarettes legislation like in Hawaii.
